The East Union and Lathrop boys soccer teams have been eliminated from the Sac-Joaquin Section Division III playoffs.

East Union dropped its rematch with top-seeded Valley 1-0 on Tuesday, while the Spartans showed well in their 2-0 loss to No. 3 Vista del Lago.

The Lancers (16-10-2), seeded eighth, previously lost to Valley (24-4-4) by the same score in the championship game of their Ervin Mendiola Memorial Classico. The quarterfinal matchup took place at Cosumnes River College, and the Vikings got their lone goal from Jose Aguirre in the first half.

Valley hosts No. 4 Rio Linda on Thursday.

In Folsom, No. 11 Lathrop (16-8-4) kept it scoreless by halftime, but Vista del Lago (16-2-3) was able to take advantage of a giveaway on the Spartans’ defensive third and scored on the counterattack early in the second half.

“First half, we played really well and competed,” Lathrop coach Alfredo Reynaga said. “We had our best chances toward the second part of the first half and missed, and we knew it was going to haunt us in the second half. We made some crucial mistakes in possession, but credit to Vista del Lago, they’re a very well-organized team and they play the ball in possession very well. It was a good match with two good teams going at it.”

The Eagles welcome Western Athletic Conference champion Pacheco on Thursday. Seventh-seeded Pacheco upset No. 2 Christian Brothers, 4-2.

“They have a beautiful field, so we were able to move the ball well,” Reynaga said. “The kids were optimistic despite the loss. We saw the No. 1-ranked team in Division III and gave them a run for money. There’s a little disappointment, but we’re holding our heads high. We’re proud of our accomplishments and fought well to get to this point.”
