The East Union girls basketball team’s streak of MVP recipients has ended, even though its streak of Valley Oak League championships did not.

The distinction goes to Jariah Indalecio, a highly versatile guard from Mountain House (11-1 VOL, 23-6 overall). She led the Mustangs to a share of the title with East Union (11-1, 23-8), which had four different players earn All-VOL MVP the previous five seasons. There were no official official league champions and all-league honors for the 2020-21 COVID year.

Mountain House’s Katrina Foster was named girls Coach of the Year.

East Union’s Dutch Ell split boys Coach of the Year with Mike Wilson of Central Catholic. Junior guard Jordan Magana is boys MVP after helping Central Catholic (11-1, 17-12) earn a co-championship with Mountain House (11-1, 18-11).

Five Manteca Unified student-athletes in all made the All-VOL boys and girls basketball teams, and another four received second-team recognition.

East Union junior forwards Ava Barrera and Zyondupree Beasley headline the area standouts Barrera averaged 9.8 points and 8.3 rebounds — both team-highs — in 12 league games, adding 2.4 steals. Beasley produced 9.0 points, 6.9 rebounds and 1.7 steals.

Junior guard Mya Everett averaged 10.3 points, 3.7 rebounds, 2.2 steals and 3.1 blocks in leading fifth-place Sierra (4-8, 9-15) to a third consecutive playoff appearance. She’s on the first team with Manteca senior Michailla Springs, who paced the Buffaloes (3-9, 8-18) with 12.8 points, 3.5 rebounds and 2.1 steals. Beasley, Everett and Springs were second-team selections last year.

East Union freshman point guard Haven Stone (8.8 points, 4.3 rebounds, 3.0 assists) is the lone area player on the all-league girls second team.

Getting honorable mention: Sierra freshman forward Emalina Latu, Sierra senior center Alison Cozby, Sierra senior guard Taylor Zalunardo and Manteca senior guard Kalaja Reese. Zalunardo also made the all-defensive team with Manteca’s Jaesha Dunn and East Union’s Julianna Gaspar.

Johan Peringelil leads the fastbreak for Manteca during the Mark Gallo Invitational at Central Catholic.
Manteca’s do-it-all senior Johan Peringelil was the only area boys player to make the All-VOL first team. He recorded 13.9 points, 7.5 rebounds, 2.6 assists and 1.8 steals but missed the final two games with a broken foot, and the Buffaloes (6-6, 12-16) came up short of a playoff berth.

East Union (7-5, 16-13) knocked off Manteca in the regular-season finale to secure third place and an automatic playoff bid. Second-team selection Lorenzo Jones spearheaded the Lancers, averaging 9.0 points and 9.5 rebounds in his breakout junior season. Forty-eight of his boards came off the offensive glass.

Manteca had a pair of second-team selections in guards Austin Barnes (11 points, 34% 3-pointers) and Jayden Scarver (7.4 points, 3.5 rebounds, 2.0 assists).

Receiving honorable mention: East Union senior forward Jackson Pellizzari, Sierra center Collins Schluer, East Union junior guard Cody Camarena, Manteca senior guard Tyler Watkins, East Union junior forward Anthony Oteri, Manteca senior center Josh Mellion and East Union junior guard Zydell King. Watkins and King were also made the all-defensive team.
