EU takes St. Marys championship game

In the championship game of the St. Mary’s Tournament, East Union used a balanced attack to defeat El Capitan 9-0 on Saturday at Arnaiz Field in Stockton.

 Cherish Burks, Michelle Castro, Alexis Erich, Deja Guzman, Samantha Owen and Amy Gann each had two hits for the Lancers and Mikala Bongi picked up the complete-game shutout, striking out seven.

 Delaney Pamplin went the distance for the Lancers, allowing just four hits.

Taylor Ward (four RBI) hit a towering three-run home run in the third inning for East Union. Samantha Owen and Amy Gann each went 3 for 4 for the Lancers.

 The Lancers went 4-0 and claimed the championship at Arnaiz Field for the second year in a row, outscoring their opponents 46-8.

Maddie Anchundo pitched  five strong innings for East Union.

Gabby Sandavol, Katie Johnson, Jaelyn Stock and Kristina Mojica each had two hits for the Lancers with Janelle Barrera and Tierra Solario played well on defense.

“This was definitely a great three days,” Lancers coach Robert Brandi said. “These girls came ready to play.  All thirteen girls brought it and everyone contributed to each win with outstanding defense and explosive at-bats.

“It was great to cap it off with a win in the championship game.  I’m proud of them all.”
