ROSEVILLE — Prior to Thursday’s Sac-Joaquin Section Division II doubles tennis tournament, Ashley Duenas and Klacey Kachalkin of East Union High played apart.

Duenas was accustomed to playing singles while Kachalkin was a doubles player turned singles. They joined forces to win the Valley Oak League tournament last week.

At the Johnson Ranch Racquet Club Thursday, Duenas and Kachalkin may have saved their best for last in the opener.

They needed three sets and a tiebreaker to get past Brenda Louie and Dani Ponce from Vanden of the Solano County Athletic Conference, 2-6, 6-4, 6-6 (7-4).

“I told them to have fun with it,” Bylow said. “Just being in the section tournament and seeing the other top players was a great experience.

“The competition here was unbelievable.”

Duenas and Kachalkin fell to No. 4 seeded Bethany Caldwell and Angela Alupoaie from Bella Vista of the Capital Valley Conference, 3-6, 0-6.

The Manteca doubles team of Wendy Lin and Rosa Zou also competed, losing to Ali Doerr and Lauren Griffin from Oakmont of the CVC, 4-6, 0-6.

Sierra High’s Vannida Nguyen and Weston Ranch’s Ly Hoang, who was the VOL top player, were part of the D-II section’s singles championship.

Nguyen drew the No. 1 seed, Kara Kecki from Granite Bay of the Sierra Foothill League.

Kecki won in straight sets, 6-0, 6-0.

“Vannida played well even though the score might not reflect it,” said Timberwolves coach Vanessa Weeks.

Hoang lost to the No. 3 seed, Carolina Chernyestsky from El Camino of the Capital Athletic League, 0-6, 0-6.
