RIPON — Just moments after Ripon High’s standout 215-pound wrestler, Travis Smith, posted the fastest pin of the night, heavyweight Mike Goldberg of Lathrop did his even faster — and quickness isn’t a trait you’d normally associate with the weight class.

Goldberg dispatched Samuel Beeler in 31 seconds — 6 ticks faster than Smith’s pinning of Ray Lucero — to put the exclamation point on the Spartans’ 51-27 non-league dual meet Tuesday at Abeyta-Hortin Gym.

From start to quick finish, Goldberg typified the intensity that Lathrop coach Dimos Birakos wanted to see in last week’s season-opening win over Chavez.

“I think we were a little more fired up tonight,” Birakos said. “Last week the guys seemed nervous because it was our first match of the season and it was at home. Overall, it was just a better team effort.”

It all started with the lightweights for Lathrop (2-0). Two forfeits, two pins, a technical fall and a major decision had the Spartans up comfortably 33-6 going into the 145-pound match, which Ripon claimed via forfeit.

Luis Oregel (119) coasted to an 11-0 win, while Andrew Aquino (125) scored the tech fall after mounting a 16-0 cushion with still 1 minute, 20 seconds to go in the second period. The two early pins came from Barry Bautista (130, 1:40) and Christian Pena (140, 0:42). Omar Guzman (152, 2:37) and Oscar Munoz (189, 1:13) also won by fall.

“Our lightweights wrestled pretty darn well,” Birakos said. “Once our upperweights catch up to our lightweights I think we’ll be decent.”

Ripon (1-2) did pick up one early win, and it ended up being the best match.

At 112 points, Ripon sophomore Nick Solario was in control for most of the opening period, but Luis Quintero escaped late and scored a take down for a 3-2 lead. Quintero continued to charge ahead in the second, eventually extending the lead to 8-2 after he was awarded a 3-point near fall at the end of the stanza.

But in the third, Solario surprised the Spartan with a reversal with 1:10 remaining, and he ended the match with a dramatic pin with 38.9 seconds left to get the Ripon crowd roaring.

The match was Solario’s first of the season.

“He was a little rusty and got a little tired, but the kid is tough,” Ripon coach Glen White said. “He put on some muscle this year and is wrestling up from 103 last year, so he’s got a little more work to do.”

Ripon’s Trevor Daniel, the Trans Valley League 145-pound champion last year, toughed out a 14-8 win over Mark Maynard in the 160-pound contest, while Trevor Smith (171) pinned Wilmer Alvarez in 3:24.

“A lot of these kids are pretty inexperienced, but I think the more we go on in the season the better we’ll get,” White said. “Lathrop looked good, give them credit. They’re well-coached, they have some good experience and some very strong wrestlers.”
