LATHROP – Steven Gigli allowed just one hit in four innings of work against the Spartans on Wednesday.
The East Union High senior hurler also helped his cause by delivering a grand slam in the third inning during the 17-0 victory at Lathrop High.
The game went five innings due to the 10-run rule.
The Lancers, with the win, improved to 5-2 in the Valley Oak League, 9-5 overall.
“That keeps us in the mix in the VOL race (with Oakdale and Manteca High),” said East Union coach Dan Triglia.
Lathrop (0-6, 3-11-1) broke up Gigli’s perfect game in the third inning on Alex Moreno’s single to right center.
That hit was all the offense the Spartans could muster, according to their coach Randy Baltazar.
“East Union is a good hitting team and they swung the bats really well today,” he said.
Gigli, who was recently moved from the leadoff to the No. 3 spot in the batting order, also went 3 for 5 with a double and five RBI.
Ronnie Limas was 3 for 4 and scored three times.
“Ronnie has been on fire,” Triglia said. “He had three consecutive hits.”
In addition, Brock Swift was 2 for 3 with two doubles, two runs and 3 RBI and Jordon Kron delivered two hits, two runs and an RBI.
Both teams will play Friday at East Union beginning at 4 p.m.
In doing so, Manteca (5-2, 11-6) kept atop of the VOL standings.
“Overall, it was a good team effort,” said Buffaloes coach Gene Ballardo. “We have to be ready to play (at Kimball) on Friday.”
Kevin Peck, who was the winning pitcher, fanned six with both runs unearned in his four innings of work. He yielded to Danny Gouveia in the fifth.
Offensively, Dan Miramontes went 3 for 4 with an RBI and drew a pair of walks. Matt Burrows drove in three runs while going 2 for 3.
“We stayed with Sonora through nearly the first three innings,” said Cougars coach Ron Wayman.
But with one out in third, Weston Ranch unraveled by committing four errors, leading to a five-run frame.
The Cougars (0-6, 1-11-1) got hits from Elias Venegas and Akiha Etu.
Weston Ranch will travel to Sonora on Friday.
