Manteca tested the No. 1-seeded Christian Brothers for three quarters in a Sac-Joaquin Section Division II quarterfinal Thursday but ran out of steam in the 57-36 defeat.
The Falcons (28-2) of Sacramento welcome No. 4 Woodcreek (25-4) for a semifinal tilt next Tuesday.
Seeded eighth, Manteca (19-8) hung tough before an injury and foul outs halted its momentum. The Buffaloes trailed 24-22 at halftime and had a 33-29 lead halfway through the third quarter.
“I’m super proud of this group,” Manteca coach Oscar Calix said. “They gave the No. 1 seed a good run and showed that we can compete at a high level.”
Christian Brothers countered with an 11-0 to end the third quarter, and Manteca was held to just three points in the fourth. The Buffs lost one of their key ball handlers, Brianna Parker, when she rolled her ankle with 5:55 left in the game. She finished with eight points and three steals.
Jada Ikharo accounted for Manteca’s lone points in the final quarter, converting an and-1. She fouled out with 3:45 remaining, ending with 11 points and six rebounds. Michailla Springs also fouled out of the game.
“Christian Brothers took advantage and sprung up their lead,” Calix said. “We could not score after and turned the ball over a lot in those final minutes.
“Sad to see the season end this way, but as a coach, I couldn’t be any more proud of this group, especially my seniors,” he added. “With this being my second year leading the program and being with that group of girls, they set the foundation. I’m excited to see what our future is at Manteca, and that is all thanks to them.”
