GIRLS BASKETBALL: Ripon dominates paint to overcome Ceres’ early sharpshooting

Ripon weathered an early onslaught from Ceres in its Patterson Tournament opener on Thursday, dominating the post in a 51-43 win.

Center Sierra Hollis anchored the Indians (6-2) with 18 points and eight rebounds, while Kaylee Hutchinson added 11 points, 10 rebounds and two steals.

Ceres (2-5) made three 3-pointers in the first quarter, building a 17-10 lead. Ripon battled back to tie it at 25-25 by halftime.

“We just needed to be more patient with the ball and we did that in the second half, resulting into some easy buckets for us,” Ripon coach Rick Inderbitzin said.

Makenzie Loechler contributed 10 points and eight rebounds. Kaylee Tuggle chipped in six points and eight boards. Mia Rodriguez fired 17 points for Ceres, accounting for five of her team’s eight made 3-pointers.

Ripon faces Central Catholic today at 5 p.m. and tourney host Patterson on Saturday starting at 1:30.


Livingston Tournament

El Capitan 52, Sierra 49

The Timberwolves (1-2) staked a 26-21 halftime lead but were unable to hold off upstart El Capitan (7-2).

Olivia Werner paced Sierra with 11 points, Brea Vieira had eight and Abby Chapman seven.

“Girls played well, had a lot of energy and led in the first half,” Sierra coach Trisha Werre said. “El Capitan came back in the third quarter and we never quite recovered.”
