Sierra overwhelmed East Union with its diverse attack on Wednesday, and six different Timberwolves scored in the 7-1 rout at Daniel Teicheira Memorial Stadium.
Tiana Cello netted a pair of goals and had chances to bag her third hat trick of the season, while striker Jenna Villanueva contributed one goal and one assist. Sierra (5-0, 15-1 overall) will continue to look to the two veteran juniors to lead the final third of the field, but the onus isn’t only on them to help make up for the recent loss of one of its top scorers to ineligibility.
Sierra has been involving all of its outfield players on the attack, and three defenders left their mark on Wednesday. The Timberwolves recorded one of their most lopsided wins over its cross-town rival in the last 15 years.
“We play so well as a team,” Sierra coach Manuel Pires said. “I thought we handled the pressure very well, and not only that we were able to organize our attacks and create a lot of problems for them.”
Left back Annalise Paule opened scoring in the seventh minute, finding the open net after East Union goalkeeper Malia Allen deflected Cello’s initial attempt. Then in the 14th minute, right back Zoe Willson got on board after dispossessing an East Union defender.
Preeya Singh tallied Sierra’s final goal in the 78th minute, starting a counter-attack from the back and working in combination with reserve freshman striker Amelia Hernandez before putting it away. Hernandez earlier scored with an easy one-time strike teed up by a negative pass from Villanueva. Singh and Hernandez’s goals were the first of their varsity careers.
“They showed great hustle out there,” Pires said of his attack-minded defenders. “These girls are all prepared when they get their opportunity to score. I thought we did a good job of applying the kind of pressure we wanted, and once we had the ball we were able to hold it and connect passes.”
East Union (3-2, 5-6-2) had scoring chances throughout and nearly matched Sierra’s shot total of 19 with its own 17. The Lancers finally got on board in the 73rd minute when Haley Sims cashed in on Taylor McMahon’s through ball.
“They capitalized on their opportunities and we didn’t,” East Union coach Carlos Gaspar said. “And we got beat to the ball, that’s the bottom line. They were just a faster to the ball than we were.”
Sierra overall had the cleaner looks at goal and also missed many of its chances, much of them redirected by junior keepers Kylie Mendez and Allen — they each finished with four saves.
“I honestly think I have two of the top goalies on my team, and unfortunately they’re both in the same grade,” Gaspar said. “They both did an amazing job.”
East Union caps its tough three-match week Friday at Manteca, while the Timberwolves aim to finish off a perfect first half of the league schedule against winless Weston Ranch.
“To be undefeated at this point, I’m really excited and proud of how hard the girls have worked for it,” Pires said. “But there are a lot of games to be played and the second time around against some of these teams will be even tougher.”
