MODESTO — After dropping all three of its Valley Oak League matches last week, East Union got a much-needed 4-1 win at Central Catholic on Wednesday to remain firmly on the path to a Sac-Joaquin Section playoff berth.
It didn’t come easily, however, as the host Raiders (1-6 VOL, 3-7-2 overall) had a surprising result in the works with their early goal. East Union (4-3, 6-7-2) was able to tie it before the end of the half thanks to Taylor McMahon’s penalty kick, but coach Carlos Gaspar was not satisfied.
“We were not playing our soccer in the first half,” he said. “We made some adjustments and overall had a much better second half, but we cannot start out a game flat like that.”
Three different players scored during the Lancers’ second-half onslaught. Thania Valencia jump started it with a nice breakaway finish, and fellow sophomore forward Melissa Gonzales was assisted by Hailey Sims on her goal. Defender Kassandra Rios capped the finals core.
First-half goalkeeper Malia Allen came up with two saves, and Kylie Mendez had one.

Manteca 5, Oakdale 2
Freshman prodigy Cameron Silva was involved in every scoring play for the second-place Buffaloes (5-1-1 VOL, 14-1-3 overall), securing her hat trick in the first half and finishing with four goals.
She was credited with the assist on Manteca’s fourth goal, which was put away by Kaley Miller. Kaylee Gines and Esmeralda Ochoa each contributed an assist, and keeper Willow Stearns had three saves.
Visiting Oakdale (2-5, 5-6-2) notched its two goals in the final 10 minutes.
