Joey Guinta came up huge in just his second match of the season for Sierra High’s boys golf team Thursday.

His co-medalist score of 7-over 44 helped the Timberwolves squeak out a 239-240 win over Kimball of Tracy at Manteca Park Golf Course. Sierra improved to 4-2 to remain in third place in the Valley Oak League.

“Joey had a very good round for just his second match of the year, but we were very fortunate that we won,” Sierra coach Jeff Williams said. “We didn’t play very smart golf out there today and that comes with maturity.”

Kimball’s Reese Maxfield also carded a 44. For Sierra, Chris Schmitz and Essley Green each scored a 47. Matt Rose finished with a 48, and Alex Orr contributed a 53.

Sierra is off next week for spring break and returns to action on April 2 against Manteca.

Off all next week

Weston Ranch 257, Lathrop DQ

At French Camp, Geoff Fallon became Lathrop High’s first ever medalist with a personal best 15-over 47 score.

Lathrop (0-5, 0-6 overall) took the loss for not fielding a full squad, but it was still a promising day for the Spartans. Matt and Sam Fallon also carded personal records with their 51s. Andres Munoz achieved the same with his 62. The Fallon brothers are triplets.

Bruce Chester-Bradt paced Weston Ranch (1-4) with a 49.
