Guzman shoots 37 in Lathrop loss to EU golf

TRACY — Lathrop sophomore Christian Guzman shot a 1-over 37 at Old River Golf Course on Wednesday, but it wasn’t enough for the Spartans as East Union won the Valley Oak League match decisively, 210-262.

Guzman had two birdies and nearly aced the par-three second hole but had it lip out.

East Union (3-0) was led by Mike Lozano’s 38. Clayton Dorland and Manuel Telles each pitched in with a 40, Trevor Baum had a 43 and Ezra Lendhardt a 44.

Others scoring for Lathrop (0-5) were Robert Berndt (51), Robby Horrocks (53), Andrew Lorentz (57) and Curtis Kimbro (64).

Sierra’s Evan Brazell and David Ketner shared medalist honors with 46s at Manteca Park Golf Course.

Nathaniel Livingston added a 47, Dillon St. Claire a 52 and David Perry a 53. The Timberwolves improved to 3-2 in the VOL.

Austin Thao shot a 47 for Weston Ranch. Joseph Ordner (53), Jimmy Sekhon (57), Jose Espinoza (63) and Justin Ordner (66) followed.

TENNIS

Sierra 5, Lathrop 4

Jameson Smith came through with a closely-contested three-set win at No. 3 doubles to help the Timberwolves improve to 2-6 in the VOL. He edged out Sahib Singh 6-2, 6-7, 6-4.

No. 1 Kyle Banks and No. 5 Cyrus Hunter (6-3, 6-2) also scored singles wins for Sierra. Mat Len and Tyler Holmes won the No. 1 doubles match 6-2, 6-4, and No. 2 Charles Wichert and Amalio Durazo won 6-0, 6-1.

Lathrop’s wins came from Navinder Dhinosa (6-3, 7-6), Chad Hoang (4-6, 6-3,6-1), Justin Diza (4-6, 6-4, 6-3) and No. 3 doubles partners Gerard Gerona and Nick Licea 6-3, 6-4.
