Victor Polanco won’t even touch the question.

The East Union girls soccer coach was recently asked to compare his last two teams, which have combined for 34 wins, zero losses, two Valley Oak League championships and the program’s first-ever Sac-Joaquin Section title.

“Hypothetically speaking, if your 2014 team played your 2015 team, who would win?” went the line of questioning.

Polanco chuckled at the thought, and then squirmed as he searched for an appropriate answer. Eventually, he settled right down the middle.

“Both teams, they have the same hunger, you know,” he said. “I see … I see … I see a tie.”

Funny, East Union (12-0, 15-0) hasn’t had many of those in the last two years, and none at all this season.

The Lancers have picked up where they left off last May when the final snapshot of their historic spring season was that of an on-field party at Lincoln High, the site of the section’s championship games. There was All-Area MVP and senior captain Isela Rivera waving the coveted blue banner, surrounded by her teammates, coaches, school officials and fans.

Today, the Lancers are led by another Rivera sister and a dangerous supporting cast that blends youth with experience.

East Union returned eight players from its section championship team, welcomed back starting goalie Anna Wood, and then added a host of fearless underclassmen, led by freshman Clarissa Lecce (nine goals, three assists) and sophomore Britney Moneyhun.

“The engine of the team was still right there,” Polanco said. “I just had to add a couple more players, which I did.”

The piece de resistance, though, is sophomore striker Ilena Rivera, who has already surpassed her oldest sister’s scoring marks from a season ago.

With Wednesday’s hat trick, Ilena now has 30 goals and 10 assists, or one more goal than Isela had while building her MVP campaign of yesteryear.

“She’s always been my inspiration. Before the season I told her ‘I’m going to break your records. I’m going to do this and do that,’ ” said Ilena, who has verbally committed to Stanislaus State with her sisters, senior Isabella Rivera (two goals, seven assists) and Isela. “She said, ‘If anybody breaks my records, it’s going to be you.’ So, of course, she’s been my inspiration.”

With two games left in the VOL season, East Union has already assured itself a third championship in four seasons. Still, there’s plenty to play for.

Polanco said this group might actually be hungrier than last year’s team, which thirsted for a section championship after a string of postseason failures.

“This team, they want to go all the way,” Polanco said. “We practice hard for that reason. It’s important to not even tie a game.”

East Union has won 20 consecutive matches dating back to last season, and that streak matters to the girls in the program.

“Teams out there want to ruin our winning streak. They want to tie or beat us, so they can say ‘we ruined their streak,’ ” Ilena said. “It’s important for us to be undefeated this season.”

That’s why East Union won’t soften its approach in this final week of the VOL season. The Lancers have outscored their opponents 62-3 in 12 league games, scoring better than five goals per game.

Their stiffest tests have come against their next two opponents, though.

East Union escaped Oakdale with a narrow 3-2 victory on April 1, a game that wasn’t decided until the final moments. Ilena scored twice in that match to give East Union a 2-1 cushion, but the Oakdale (8-2-2, 14-6-3) equalized.

It looked like a tie was imminent when East Union’s Jenna Zuniga (four goals, team-high 11 assists) punched in the game-winner with about eight minutes left.

“It was a great game. I’m not going to lie,” Ilena said. “They gave us a run for our money.”

The two meet for a second time tonight at Dino Cunial Stadium at East Union.

East Union will close the regular season on Wednesday at Manteca (9-2-1, 18-3-1), which allowed a goal in the first two minutes and never recovered in a 2-0 win.

“Those games, they’re going to make our team stronger, you know,” Polanco said. “They’re good teams. We have to play our game against them. They’re not going to be easy games, but they’ll be good games before we go into the playoffs.”
