CERES — Jode Johnson hit a walk-off three-run blast Tuesday at Ceres High, where the second-place Bulldogs stunned Valley Oak League frontrunner East Union, 8-6.

Kourtni McCall went the distance, striking out four, but a handful of uncharacteristic EU fielding errors would allow Ceres to stick around until Johnson’s heroics ended it.

“It was a very untypical day for us,” EU head coach Brian Goulart said. “We had crucial errors — dropped fly balls, routine grounders.

“We allowed them extra outs.”

East Union took the lead in the top of the seventh, but three straight Bulldog hits in the home half would tell the tale.

McCall went 2 for 4 with double, and Jillian Goulart was 3 for 3.

Cassie Waggy went 2 for 3 with a walk, and Cherie DeJesus was 2 for 3 with a double and two runs batted in.

East Union is now tied with Ceres atop the VOL race at 8-2.

The second-place T’Wolves (7-3) visit Northgate Park this evening in another huge matchup.

Ceres faces Oakdale (7-3) Friday after a trip to Sonora today.
