STOCKTON — Weston Ranch no longer sits alone atop the girls Valley Oak League basketball standings.
Formerly undefeated in league play, the Cougars were outplayed in every aspect of the game Tuesday in a 55-35 loss to visiting Kimball and find themselves tied with the Jaguars at the midway point of the VOL campaign.
“We missed a lot of jumps shots,” Weston Ranch coach Chris Bauer said. “And when you are a jump-shot shooting team and they are not falling early you dig yourself a hole that is hard to get out of.
“We battled back and we had our chances. We have been on a good run but we didn’t play well tonight.”
After Kimball (6-1 VOL, 17-3 overall) tied the game at 11, the Jaguars went on a 10-0 run and the Cougars (6-1, 13-5) came no closer than six points in the first half and 10 points in the second.
“Everything worked for us tonight,” Kimball coach Mike Granillo said. “We knew that Weston Ranch had a bunch of shooters and our game plan worked to stop them.”
Eight of the Jaguars’ 14 third-period points came in transition.
“We broke the press so we got some points off the break,” Granillo said.
Kimball’s defense overpowered the Cougars, holding Weston Ranch to making just 12 of 32 shots from the field. The Jaguars won the battle of the boards 37-22 and forced 19 turnovers.
Elisabeth Alexander led the Cougars with 16 points and teammate Rauline Martinez made six rebounds. Kimball’s Dowanae Anthony led all scorers with 21 points and she made 11 rebounds while teammates Alexis Clark added 10 points and 10 rebounds and Allison Schmidt 12 points.
