MODESTO – Despite a 10-2 run by Golden Valley midway through the fourth quarter Saturday in the Consolation Championship of the Modesto City Classic, East Union found itself in position to send the game into overtime with two 3-point attempts by Brandon Cline in the closing seconds. Both long tries rimmed out and the Cougars escaped with a 65-62 win at Johansen High School.
“They were in his (Cline’s) face the whole night after he hit a couple of 3-pointers,” Lancers coach Brett Lewis said. “I didn’t want to call a timeout there at the end because I knew he would get some good looks if we were in a scatter and he did, but they just didn’t fall.
“With two starters out we were young out there, but we competed the whole night and we were out there for the win.”
Cline led all scorers with 22 points behind seven 3-pointers and finished the tournament with 21 from behind the arc.
“We didn’t have Rob Vaughn for this game but we really stepped up,” Cline said. “Missing that shot at the end just kills me, it really does. I thought it was going down.”
The two teams went back and forth the whole game, with neither able to gain a double-digit lead. Zac Carillo added 10 points for the Lancers (2-2) and Tracy Fayerweather led Golden Valley (3-1) with 20 points.
Rigo Gutierrez (15 points) drew the Buffaloes (1-4) within 66-64 on a 3-pointer with 4.5 seconds left, and following a timeout the Eagles committed a foul on the ensuing inbounds pass, sending Taylor Hasal to the line for two free throws. Hasal made them both, but Ty Galloway (22 points) answered with two free throws for Enochs (2-2) and the win.
E.J. Godfrey missed much of the second half with foul trouble, but when he was in he was a force to be reckoned with for Manteca with 17 points in the first half and 28 overall with 10 rebounds and two steals.
All-tournament team selection Logan Vos added 14 points and 17 rebounds. Ripon Christian next faces Hughson for its home opener Tuesday at 7:15 p.m.
Junior center Will Ward led the way with 14 points while earning all-tournament honors. Eddie Andrade posted 13 points while hitting three 3-pointers. Guillermo Nunez chipped in nine points.
Sierra will look to even its non-league record at Tokay (Lodi) Wednesday.
Austin Haro (13), Ryan Fox (12) and Nick Garcia (11) contributed double-digit scoring, while Enochs’ Austin Grant topped all players with 20 points.
