Lancers rule Sierra Invite again

East Union co-head coach Brian Goulart summed up his team’s round in the Sierra Invitational with one word Wednesday.

“Fun.”

Winning the tournament for a sixth straight season at the familiar Manteca Park Golf Course certainly makes it fun, but how the Lancers went about doing so was what made it an even more enjoyable experience.

With their top player having a rare off day other Lancers stepped up with career-best performances. Senior Jordan Vinson was low medalist with an 8-over 80, and East Union outpointed runner-up Enochs of Modesto 442-459 for the team crown. Rocklin was the only other team to card a sub-500 score, finishing third with a 495.

Brooke Riley joined Vinson among the ranks of top-seven medalists, posting a fourth-place 84. She tied the tournament record as a freshman last year with a 73. Breanna Perkins and Brittany Ugalino tied for seventh place with 89s. Perkins triple-bogeyed one hole but otherwise did no worse than bogey. Ugalino, meanwhile, recorded a personal best 2-over 39 on the front nine.

Vinson birdied her final hole — the signature par-3 eighth — for the one-stroke edge over Enoch’s Alyse Padilla.

“There were many magical moments out there for us,” Goulart said. “We’re real excited for Jordan to medal. She is just as good a ball striker as Brooke, but if she continues to improve her short game she can go super low.”

Even sophomore Rebeca Leonard was in on the fun. Her 100 rounded out the team score, but not after setting a personal best 44 on the front nine.

Tourney host Sierra and Manteca placed seventh and eighth, respectively, in the 17-team field.

Scoring for Sierra were Lexus Barnes (96), Vanessa Rodrigues (98), Kayla Wilson (102), Legacy Barnes (108) and Krystal Rayevich (114). Manteca scorers were Katie Hankins (95), Kaylie Grimes (96), Dom Graham (101), Sarah Vegas (112) and Bella Garcia-Mendez (121).
