RIPON – The East Union girls varsity soccer team topped Ripon High Friday at Stouffer Field, 5-0.

The Lancers (4-0-1) scored twice in the first half and soon after put the game away.

“This was a preseason game but it was also a good learning experience (for us),” said Indians coach Jose Bobadilla.

He added: “We knew coming in that East Union is a strong team.”

Ripon (1-2) had to play shorthanded. Bobadilla noted that five of his players were ruled out due to injuries. In the second half, he could sense his squad tiring out with the lack of depth on the bench.

Still, Bobadilla praised his goalie Yvette Serrano, who managed three stellar saves, along with sweeper Brittany Maberry.

The Indians will travel to Stagg on Tuesday while East Union will take on Lincoln on Wednesday.

The Timberwolves improved to 2-0-1 with the non-league win against the Raiders.

The only score of the game came at the five-minute mark by Naomi Nunis, who was assisted by Asia Cortez.

Sierra relied on its stellar defense led by senior Ashley Sohal. Patricia Angel was strong in the middle while sophomores Megan Gonsalves and Dasisy Rivera both delivered from their outside positions, according to Timberwolves coach Manuel Pires.

He also praised senior goalie Lia Unterholzner, who had six saves including three outstanding stops.

Sierra will travel to Tracy on Tuesday before playing host to its upcoming weekend tournament.
