Lathrop golfer Guzman places 3rd in Oakdale Cup

OAKDALE — Lathrop High’s Christian Guzman continued his strong start to the season Monday, placing third out of 99 individuals in the Oakdale Cup.

He shot 2-over 74 at Oakdale Golf & Country Club and was three off medalist Zach Gardner of Escalon. Oakdale’s Calvin Reed was the runner-up with an even 72.

Tournament host Oakdale claimed the team title with a 394. Ceres (438), Buhach Colony (455), Escalon (455) and Bret Harte (459) rounded out the top five. Eighteen schools participated.

Lathrop freshman Luke Marcelo carded a 93 and is the second best scorer in an 18-hole event in school history. Stebastien Iniquez finished with a 122.

Venture Academy 7

RIPON — Venture Academy jumped out with a four-run rally but was shut out for the next four innings as the Knights (2-0) chipped away to take the lead for good.

Willem Hoekstra went 3 for 4 with two doubles and three RBIs. Kizer Vanderveer (two runs, RBI) and Brian Thomas (three RBIs) were each 2 for 3.

SOFTBALL

Manteca 9, Pitman 4

TURLOCK — The Buffaloes (3-2) started their busy week with a comeback victory, plating six runs in the seventh inning to grab the lead.

Sierra Martinez highlighted the attack with two doubles and an RBI in a 3-for-4 effort. Haighley Kissee was 2 for 3 with a double and two runs. Kaileah Johannsen went 2 for 4 with two doubles, and Isabella Gonzales tagged a triple. Kissee pitched a complete game for Manteca, firing eight strikeouts.

Manteca continues its five-game week today against visiting Beyer.
