WESTON RANCH — Tuesday’s loss to East Union may hurt the Weston Ranch High girls basketball team’s playoff chances in the end, but the Cougars were able to snap a four-game losing streak with a 56-34 victory over Lathrop.
Jazmin Strane churned out 24 points and 18 rebounds but was 4 for 15 from the free-throw line. Freshman Emoni Wilson ended up with 14 points, and senior Courtney Duran added seven points, 10 boards and six steals.
It took a while for Weston Ranch (7-7 Valley Oak League, 14-11 overall) to kick it into gear with standout point guard Timnesha Wilson out for the game. Wilson suffered a concussion against East Union.
Weston Ranch led 6-2 after a quarter of play but went off for 21 points in the second.
“Any win is a good win, especially with us struggling,” Weston Ranch coach Chris Bauer said. “We had issues with Timnesha being out, because we didn’t have our floor general to lead us.”
Lathrop had to deal with that same scenario after promising freshman point guard Jazlyn Simon, the team’s leading scorer, left the game with a concussion early in the opening period. Jasmine Elder paced the Spartans (0-15, 2-23) with 10 points, and Erica Sanchez had nine.
“We kept her out as a precautionary measure, she felt a little dizzy after that,” Lathrop coach Ed Fang said. “It obviously hurt us big time. She’s the person that runs the offense and we had to make adjustments on the fly, but my players kept their composure and played hard.”
The Knights matched Hughson’s offensive output in three quarters, the difference being a 9-6 margin in favor of the visitors.
Kelsey Tillema led RC with 13 points and 10 rebounds. Amanda Boersma turned in six points and eight steals before fouling out. Madelynn Birchall finished with 17 points for Hughson.
Senior center Lauren Feddersen paced Ripon (6-2, 14-10) with 11 points, and Sereena Hertel chimed in with seven.
