Lathrop High’s wrestling squad won the final four matches to stun visiting Escalon 41-35 in a nonleague double-dual meet hosted by the Spartans on Wednesday. Chavez of Stockton was also present but did not face Lathrop due to time constraints.

Escalon, a small-school powerhouse out of the Trans-Valley League, is missing three of its top grapplers who are on the school’s football team. Lathrop also had its disadvantages with several Spartans wrestling at higher weight divisions to get matches in.

Wilmer Alvarez came through with a pin in the final match of the night with the team score tied at 35. Lathrop trailed 35-20 before closing with its big streak. Other standouts include freshman Alex Garcia, Luis Oregel, Christian Pena, Omar Guzman and Oscar Munoz.

Jasmine Ivey won two matches on the night, one against another girl from Chavez. The Spartans also claimed the junior varsity contest, 48-24.

Lathrop will next compete in the Ceres Tournament this Saturday, while the JV wrestlers head to the Valley Oak League Novice Tournament hosted at Sierra High.
