Riley Gier set a new school record Saturday during the Amanda Garcia Memorial Invitational hosted by Atwater High.
The Lathrop senior won the 3-mile Greg McKinstry Boys Championship race in 15 minutes, 26 seconds, edging Atwater’s Ricky Barron by 3 seconds. Atwater won the team title with 27 points, while Lathrop took third (97) and Ripon fifth (113) out of 10 teams. Miguel Acosta-Pearson led Ripon runners with a 13th-place finish in 16:48.
Other scorers for Lathrop were Caleb Montiel (22nd overall, 17:31), Jared Cook (28th, 17:46), Mario Luna (29th, 17:47) and Tristan Ramirez (32nd, 17:53). Following Acosta-Pearson for Ripon were Lucas de Vera (16th, 17:11), Landen Morse (26th, 17:42), Matteo de Vera (33rd, 17:55) and Isidro Silveira (37th, 18:08).
Two local harriers finished in the top 10 of the Dave Donaldson Girls Championship. Sophia Jung came in sixth place overall for Ripon, clocking in at 19:59.60. Lathrop was paced by Mackenzie Collins, who took ninth in 20:15.70 — also a school record.
Gregori (39) won the girls race, while Lathrop (81) and Ripon (86) were third and fifth, respectively.
Jacquelyn Pena Santillan (14th, 20:59.4), Lilliana Rodriguez (16th, 21:44.8), Dahlia Ricaldi (23rd, 22:28.9) and Brianna Valencia (41st, 26:16.9) rounded out scoring for Lathrop. The Indians’ contributors were Paige Thomas (17th, 21:49.8), Katya Vega (24th, 22:29.7), Noeli Jimenez (28th, 22:53.9) and Sophie White (30th, 22:56.4).
In the Open Division races, Ripon’s Ashourina Gonzalez (17th, 24:30.5) was the top female from the area, and fellow Indian Clemens Castro (18th, 18:24.6) led the way in the boys race.
Bulldog Invite
Christian Gonzalez and rest of Sierra got reacquainted with the annual site of the Sac-Joaquin Section Championships on Saturday.
Gonzalez, a returning state qualifier, placed 11th in 16:17.2 in the 5,000-meter varsity boys race at Willow Hills Reservoir in Folsom. Running against mostly larger-school opponents, the Timberwolves took 16th out of 21 teams. Jesuit won with three runners in the top four.
The Sierra girls took 12th out of 14 and were spearheaded by sophomore Anna Dittman, who finished 14th in 19:19.8.
In lower levels, Sierra took fourth in sophomore boys, with Mateo Cervantez (12:10.1) and Alvin Varghese (12:42.2) were fourth and 10th, respectively, on the 3,400-meter course.
Wildcat Forward Motion Invitational
Ripon Christian competed in the junior varsity races in San Ramon.
The boys came in seventh place and were led by Matijs Zylstra’s 19th-place finish in 18:18.9. Elizabeth Rich took fourth in the girls race, crossing the finish in 22:03.60
The Knights’ frosh-soph boys took 10th.
