With three starters sitting the first half of Sierra’s final nonleague contest at Downey on Friday, the Timberwolves had some trouble getting untracked against the winless host team.

Sierra leaned on its post players to get things going, as 6-foot-2 center Allie Walljasper scored a season-high 18 points to lead a 40-21 victory. Kristen Maestretti added eight points for the Timberwolves, who enter Valley Oak League play with an 8-5 record. They take on visiting Oakdale next Wednesday.

Sierra nursed a 13-12 halftime lead but widened the gap with a 16-4 explosion in the third quarter.

“Downey was 0-10 going into tonight’s contest, so we knew they would be dangerous,” Sierra coach Martha Spivey said. “They were hungry for their first win and we knew that we had a huge target on our back.

“This week we have been focusing on defensive rotation and executing our plays, and tonight we did both very well.”
