Ripon’s varsity boys and girls track and field teams secured their outright Trans Valley League titles Thursday at Hughson High.
Marcus Madoski and Starla Skiles starred for the Indians in the league finale, with each contributing three individual first-place finishes. The boys team totaled 148 points, keeping runner-up Sonora (124) and host Hughson (123) at bay. Ripon’s girls lone threat was Hilmar, but they outpointed the Yellowjackets, 136-103. Both Ripon teams won all three relay events. Ripon Christian, fielding the smallest team, took seventh in the boys and girls standings.
The TVL Championships also served as a qualifier for the Sac-Joaquin Section Division V meet, which takes place May 14 and 16 at Riverbank High. The top four placers in every event automatically qualify. Others placing outside of the top five may also advance by meeting or surpassing at-large marks.
A state qualifier in the hurdles a year ago, Skiles added the 100-meter dash to her league resume, setting a personal record with a first-place time of 12.27 seconds.
She did her usual damage in her specialty events, winning the 100 hurdles in 14.22 while three-peating in the 300 hurdles with a new PR of 43.69 — currently the top time ran in the SJS this season. Skiles was also on the winning 4x400 relay with Kaiya Kroutil, Olivia Ellis and Clara Schoolland. The foursome finished in 4 minutes, 1.05 seconds.
Schoolland, another returning state qualifier, won the high jump (5-01), placed fifth in the 300 hurdles (49.66) and took fourth in the 400 (1:01.93). Kroutil was third in the 400 with a 58.87 PR.
Rylee Agbayani-Duenas, Olivia Maragos, Emily Paxton and Ellis won the 4x100 relay in 50.42. Ripon’s winning 4x800 relay of Madelyn Reedy, Kyla Agbayani-Duenas, Paige Thomas and Cheyann Roberts won in 10:38.51.
Ellis, a freshman, took fourth in the 100 (13.00) and third in the 200 (27.14). Paxton set a PR in the triple jump, placing third with a top mark at 33-05 ¼. Ellena Parenti was the runner-up to Schoolland in the high jump (4-11) and third in the 100 hurdles (17.75). Shayla McKeon took third in the shot put with a PR of 29-11 ½.
One of the top-ranked high jumpers in the state, Madoski set a personal record in winning the 400-meter dash in 50.63 seconds. He easily won the high jump with a 6-foot-4 mark, as well as the triple jump at 42-04 ¼. The senior is a repeat league champion in all three events.
Ryan Bell nearly doubled in the throwing events. He won the shot put with a PR of 44-07 and took second in the discus at 127-07.
Eric Guevara claimed the pole vault title with a mark of 12-09. He was also on the first-place mile relay (3:30.80) with Logan Lefebvre, Dru Orlando and Ricky Langenfeld.
Ripon’s champion 4x100 quartet (42.90) consisted of Nathan Curless, Michael Evans, Nathan Gaines and Orlando. Langenfeld combined with Jacob Bair, Lucas de Vera and Matteo de Vera to help win the 4x800 (8:40.56).
Gaines is the 200 runner-up (23.10) and third-place finisher in the 100 (11.28).
Ripon Christian has one league champion in Reagan Van Der Hoek, who claimed the girls long jump title at 15-09 ½. In the discus throw, Christiana Lambdin took third with a mark of 95-00 ½.
