The logjam in the top half of the Valley Oak League girls soccer standings did not budge Monday after Manteca and Central Catholic played to a 1-1 draw in a make-up match at Guss Schmiedt Field.

The Buffaloes (5-2-1, 11-4-2 overall) seized a short-lived lead when Madison Burch converted on a penalty kick late in the second half. Central Catholic (6-2-1, 9-4-2) responded in the next minute when Skyler Hoy skipped a shot past the Buffaloes’ keeper.

Manteca was coming off a dramatic 2-1 win over rival East Union on Saturday. Two days prior, Central Catholic nipped the Buffaloes, 2-1.

“We definitely played better than we did last time,” Manteca coach Justin Coenenberg said. “We were much more physical with them and we were able to win balls in the air. For the most part we were controlling the midfield, and because of that we were able to create more shooting opportunities.

Manteca had a 19-10 advantage in shots and limited the Raiders to just three in the second half.

Coenenberg ended up 1-0-1 for the day. After coaching Manteca’s girls team, he raced to Tracy to lead the Manteca’s boys to a 2-0 win over Kimball.
