STOCKTON – Manteca shrugged off a tough 6-2 loss Wednesday against Davis High and took it out on the Chavez Titans in a 15-0 blowout Thursday at Chavez High.
The Buffaloes (2-4-1) got strong starting pitching from Matt Barber. Barber twirled a one-hitter over the mercy-rule shortened contest, striking out five over five innings of work.
Manteca cruised offensively, scoring runs in each of the five innings and opening with a run in the first and two more in each of the next two frames. Michael Timmons paced the club, going 2 for 3 with a triple and a double, while Matt Burrows also went 2 for 3, smashing a double and driving in a run.
James Dadasovich got in on the action, collecting an RBI single and scoring a run, while C.J. Rivas added a RBI double in the win.
“It was good to see everybody hitting the ball and it was good to see everybody get to play,” Manteca head coach Gene Ballardo said. “It’s always good to get a win, now our focus is on opening league on Tuesday in Lathrop and getting ready to go.”
Manteca closed out its preseason with a strong performance, giving the club much needed momentum to open an always-challenging Valley Oak League schedule.
Weston Ranch (2-2) battled through three innings of scoreless baseball and Edison scratched across two in the fourth and four in the fifth to put it away.
Akiha Etu provided the Cougars with their only offensive production, going 2 for 3 with a home run. Steven Singh handled the pitching duties, going five innings for the Cougars and surrendering four earned runs.
“Right now our goal is to try and gain some consistency in our mental approach,” Cougar head coach Dave Smith said. “Those are the areas where we will have to improve if we want to become more successful.”
The Cougars will be back on the diamond Wednesday when they play host to Monterey Trail of Elk Grove.
Robbie DeVries handled the pitching duties, tossing the complete-game shutout for Ripon Christian. Clayton Prins provided the only offensive contributions, leading off the sixth inning with a double, stealing third and scoring on an Arie Den Dulk sacrifice fly.
Steve Vander Molen got back in the swing of things after an extended basketball commitment, going 3 for 4 in his first action of the season.
