The duel between the Valley Oak League’s remaining undefeated boys tennis teams is set.
Manteca High did its part Tuesday, beating host rival Sierra, 8-1. The Buffaloes (3-0) travel to Weston Ranch on Thursday.
“The big showdown is on Thursday,” Manteca coach Frank Fontana said. “It’s going to be a nice, competitive match. I know they’ve really improved and so have we, so it should be a good battle.”
Forrest Tolman accounted for Sierra’s only win Tuesday, defeating Oral Nunis 6-3, 6-4 in No. 1 singles.
Manteca dominated the rest. Cruising to straight-set victories were Mike Lopez (6-0, 6-1), Jacob Webb (6-0, 6-0), Yok-JingMa (6-2, 6-0), Chris Kloska (6-0, 6-0) and Jorge Sierra (6-1, 6-0).
The most competitive match came at No. 1 doubles, with Manteca’s Alex Vazquez and Thomas Reza coming through, 7-6, 6-4. Sam Dhaliwal and Puneet Sandhu won 6-0, 6-2; and Izham Reger and Angel Tejada tallied a 6-0, 6-0 shutout.
Weston Ranch 8, Kimball 1
The Cougars got singles wins from Carl Legaspi (6-1, 6-1), Sukhman Singh (6-0, 5-7, 6-4), Kevin Yamayoshi (6-1, 6-4), Serbinder Singh (6-1, 6-3), Adrian Andrade (6-1, 6-1) and Raymond Lagoc (6-4, 7-5).
The No. 2 doubles team of Ion Obiso and Tejpaul Bainiwal swept, 7-6, 6-3, while the other two doubles matches went to third sets.
Oakdale 6, East Union 3
Lancer No. 3 singles player Tyler Bertao battled back from a 1-4 first-set deficit to upend Oakdale’s Chandler Johnson, 7-6 (7-1), 6-3.
East Union also won and No. 4 and 5 singles, with Arturo Leon (6-4, 7-5) and Raymund Martinez (6-2, 6-0) prevailing.
The top doubles team of Chris Herrera and Josh Kolkmann dropped a three-set heartbreaker to Andrew Gilpin and Daniel Martinez, 3-6, 7-6, 4-6. Herrera and Kolkmann could not hold a 4-1 lead in the final set.
