Manteca High’s defending Sac-Joaquin Section Division III champion boys tennis team has a new look for the 2018 season, which began with a 7-2 Valley Oak League win at Sierra on Tuesday.
No. 1 singles player Solman Aniss and No. 2 Kurtis Ma return for the largely untested group of Buffaloes. Aniss held off Sierra’s Kyle Banks 7-5-6-3, while Ma defeated Quentin Banks, 6-2, 6-1. Kevin Lin, a doubles player the past two seasons, outlasted Mat Len 6-0, 6-7 (5), 6-3 in his singles debut from the No. 3 spot.
“We return only four players from last year’s varsity team and are in rebuilding mode,” Manteca coach Frank Fontana said. “We have six players who have less than a year of playing. We are young and today sometimes our inexperience showed.”
Manteca still swept all six singles matches, with DeAngelo Caldera (6-2, 6-1), Harshawn Singh (5-7, 7-6[3], 10-3) and Nick Pio (7-5, 6-3) doing their part. Caldera is one of just two seniors on the team.
Niko Plares and Ryan Foo won at No. 1 doubles, 6-2, 6-2. Sierra claimed the other two doubles matches — No. 2 Jassan Gil and David Vera edged out Manteca’s Ravpreet Grewal and Kayson Neduvakkattu 6-7(5), 6-4, 10-8, and No. 3 Juan Ponce and Jet Morales prevailed, 6-1, 6-4.

Weston Ranch 2,
 Linden 2 (9)
STOCKTON — Nine innings were not enough to decide this nonleague battle.

Weston Ranch (2-0-1) was anchored by strong pitching, as Rylan Tinsley struck out eight over five innings and Carlos Drain threw the final four. Austin Cappas drove in the Cougars’ first run in the first inning.
