In a cross-town Valley Oak League match, the Manteca High girls tennis squad came away with a 7-2 win Tuesday at Sierra.

Oakdale 5, East Union 4
Strong efforts by the Lancers’ top singles player Rebecca Jacobson along with No. 2 player Ashley Duenas wasn’t enough to get past host Oakdale on Tuesday.
East Union (1-4) also got victories from No. 4 singles Brooke Niendorf and No. 5 player Jocylin Meza.
The Lancers had trouble in doubles play, with No. 3 singles Klasey Kachalkin suffering a hard-fought loss.
“We had a great opportunity to win the match,” said East Union coach Julia Bylow.
She praised the efforts of several of her players.
“Rebecca is finding her groove and she and Ashley are coming on strong. Brooke (Niendorf) has been steady for us all season,” Bylow added.
East Union will host Lathrop on Thursday and will close out the first half early next week against Sierra.
Sonora 9, Lathrop 0
Despite the loss, Spartans coach Rebecca Whitlock came away encouraged by her No. 2 doubles team.
Angie Rodriguez and Michelle Alaniz proved to be competitive despite losing in straight sets (4-6, 5-7).
“Both girls played passionately and came off the court proud of their efforts,” she said.
Whitlock added, “We were encouraged by the progress of all the girls. We have a young program and so many of our players are new to tennis and really need to focus on growth of their ability rather than scores.”
