ROSEVILLE — Manteca’s Ayden Marshall placed third Saturday at 154 pounds in the Sac-Joaquin Section Division III Boys Wrestling Tournament at West Park High and will lead a contingent of six Buffaloes into Friday’s two-day Masters Championships at the Stockton Arena.
Marshall finished the day 4-1 with a pin and posted a 10-1 major decision over Ponderosa’s Nathan Garcia for the bronze medal.
“It was a pretty hard match at the beginning,” Marshall said. “But I kept listening to Coach (Vince) Bordi, and it all went well from there.”
Manteca’s Derrick Day (128) eked out a thrilling 4-2 sudden victory for fifth place over Azariah Barajas of Golden Valley.
“In overtime, I was waiting for him to make a mistake or to come through with a hard shot I could score with,” Day said. “I knew he was going to try and throw so like my dad, and Coach Bordi always taught me — heavy hips and sit on it.
“It worked pretty well for me.”
Manteca’s Winston Snyder (172) pinned Lincoln of Lincoln’s Ethan Volzer for fifth place.
“I was ready to win,” Snyder said of his match with Volzer. “I knew I could do it.
“I was a little tired but going into the third period I knew how to bring it — hard. I rocked it with a cradle, stuck it and waited for the ref to call the pin. I am now headed to Masters with a fifth-place finish.”
As a result of their Top-8 finishes, Isaiah Evans (287, sixth), Josiah Sagapolu (184, seventh) and Ryder Vasquez (197, eighth) round out the Buffaloes who qualified for Masters.
Jesse Moe (162, fourth), Nicholas Luna (154, sixth) and Isaac Alvarez (222, sixth) advanced for East Union.
“It was pretty exciting,” Moe said. “Last year Divisionals was as far as I got.
“This year I came back harder, and I am really excited to be coming back and wrestling next weekend at Stockton Arena.”
Sierra’s Amitaj Kandola (197, sixth) and James Morimoto (108, eighth) also advanced to Masters, which will begin Friday morning.
