East Union had Oakdale on the ropes during Thursday’s Valley Oak League matchup at Dino Cunial Field.

The Lancers squandered a one-goal cushion in the last 10 minutes of regulation and couldn’t avoid a 4-3 loss.

“I think in the end my players were too confident,” East Union head coach Victor Polanco said. “Oakdale came pushing back. My defense gave them a couple of corners, and that’s how they scored their last two goals.”

East Union (2-2 VOL, 2-5-2) fell behind 1-0 in the fourth minute, but then scored the next two goals to take a 2-1 lead into the half.

In the 44th minute, the Mustangs tallied the equalizer to make it 2-2.

East Union’s Julio Rangel scored the go-ahead goal to make it 3-2 in the 58th minute, assisted by Humberto Andrade.

Oakdale (2-0-1, 7-3-4) stole the victory with goals in the 70th and 72nd minutes, each coming off a corner kick.

“One behind the other one,” Polanco said. “That’s the way it is. We have to be focused for the whole 40 minutes. The team played good. It’s disappointing, but now we need to forget this game and go back to practice.”

East Union’s Uriel Flores tied the game at one apiece in the sixth minute, while Jaime Castaneda notched the other first-half goal.

East Union will visit Sierra Tuesday at 5:30 p.m.



Manteca 1, Sonora 0

Forward Marcus Montano scored the game’s only goal on an assist from Brandon Landwehr as the Buffaloes improved to 3-1 in the VOL and 11-1-1 overall.

Montano’s goal came during the 53rd minute.

Manteca’s senior goalie Abdiel Chaquito finished with eight saves.

“We did a great job of possessing and moving off the ball,” Manteca head coach Justin Coenenberg said. “We had some great combination play. One thing we’ve been working on is switching the point of attack, and we did that very well. Unfortunately that didn’t lead (to more goals).

“But give Sonora credit, they did a great job. They are quite comfortable sitting back, playing defense and looking to counter. They played us well.”

The Buffaloes, who outshot Sonora 21-7, will host Weston Ranch Tuesday at 4 p.m.



Weston Ranch 0, Lathrop 0

Hoping to bounce back from its first VOL loss, Weston Ranch couldn’t find the back of the net in a scoreless tie with Lathrop.

Weston Ranch (2-1-1, 10-3-1) put 19 shots on Lathrop goalie Eric Deleon, who finished with eight saves.

Weston Ranch’s defensive line – Victor Munoz, Sal Molina, Alex Gonzalez and Luis Esparza – have only given up one goal in league and just 11 all season.

Lathrop (0-3-1 VOL) travels to Manteca next Thursday.



Sierra 6, Kimball 1

Bryan Ramos registered a hat trick during a blowout of Kimball, which fell to 0-4 in league play.

Sierra (2-1-1, 6-4-2) led 2-0 at the half.

Ramos also had an assist to go with his three-goal performance.

Cesar Martinez scored a pair of goals and tallied an assist, Henry Diaz had two assists, while Anis Guedoir one.

Jesus Coronado rounded out the scoring with a goal.

Sierra 3, Kimball 0

Jesse Semenza netted two goals and Fabian Lopez had one as Sierra blanked Kimball.
