One gutty pitching performance was spoiled in its previous outing, and another was wasted Monday for East Union High’s baseball team.
Doomed by defensive miscues and a struggling offense, the Lancers fell 5-0 on the road against defending Valley Oak League and Sac-Joaquin Section Division-IV champion Oakdale.
Jordan Kron gave up just two earned runs and six hits while striking out four, walking one and hitting one in six innings.
Last Friday in Sonora, East Union forced seven extra innings after tying it in the top of the seventh, only to lose 5-4. Brock Swift threw eight-plus innings in relief, and the winning run scored was aided by an infield error.
On Monday, East Union committed what East Union coach Dan Triglia called “three mental errors and two physical errors” in the second inning, when the Mustangs (4-1, 11-3 overall) plated four of their runs.
The Lancers (1-2, 5-5), meanwhile, are scoreless in 14 innings despite outhitting Oakdale 7-6 Monday. Steven Gigli was the only East Union player to get as far as third base, doing so in the third.
Southpaw hurler Brennon Williams gave up all seven hits and struck out five while throwing six scoreless innings for the Mustangs. He was also 2 for 3 with two RBIs. Russell Longworth logged a 1-2-3 seventh inning.
“We had one bad half inning that killed us,” Triglia said. “Other than that we played pretty well, we’re just having issues hitting guys in. We’re not stringing anything together and getting hits in bunches.”
In Sonora, the Timberwolves (3-1, 7-3) managed to take a one-run lead in the fifth after going down 5-0 after two innings.
Jason Angelo drove in Nathan O’Leary (3 for 4, double) for Sierra’s go-ahead run, but in the bottom half Sonora’s Jack Gardella drove one in with a two-out single and was followed by Devin Mason’s RBI triple that pushed Sonora (2-2, 4-8) ahead for good.
Dylan DeBrouwer batted 4 for 5 for Sierra, and Bret Wilson was 2 for 4 with a double.
In a make-up game in Tracy Monday, Kimball (2-2, 5-2) capitalized on 13 errors in the first three innings along with 15 overall walks issued by Weston Ranch pitchers.
Tyler Scharnow drove in a run for the Cougars (0-3, 1-8-1). Camron Turner and Kevin Haruta were each 1 for 1.
