WESTON RANCH — The next generation of Manteca High boys tennis players are picking up where their predecessors left off.

Led by Alex McAdams’ three victories and a four-set sweep from the doubles teams, the Buffaloes coasted 13-2 against Weston Ranch Thursday.

It was a delayed start to the Valley Oak League season for vote teams with two matches rained out earlier this week.

“It was a pretty solid opening match considering the weather conditions we’ve had,” Manteca coach Frank Fontana said. “With a lot of new guys playing, it was a nice first match.

“Now we have to get ready for the big one Tuesday against Ceres High which is the preseason favorite in my eyes.”

McAdams gave up just one game in his sets against Weston Ranch’s Chris Legaspi and Mike Tongpolad combined, but he was challenged in his first contest of the day with Cougar No. 1 Satinder Singh.

McAdams prevailed, 7-5.

Manteca’s No. 1 doubles team of Max Angelo and Oral Nunis won their matches convincingly, 10-2 and 10-1. Xavier Lopez and Marcus Munoz claimed their first set 10-1 but was tested in their 10-1 win against Weston Ranch’s No. 1 tandem of Kevin Yamayoshi and Jovincent Legaspi.

“He played most of last year at doubles, and he stepped up and had a strong showing as our No. 1 (singles player),” Fontana said. “I’m also really excited about our No. 1 doubles team. They played really well and hopefully they continue the progression for the rest of the season.”

Manteca’s No. 2 and 3 singles players Alex Barragan (7-5, 6-3) and Mark Leon (6-0, 6-0) each contributed a pair of team points.

Singh shut out Barragan and edged out Leon 6-4 for Weston Ranch’s only points.

“The score was not indicative of how well we played,” Weston Ranch coach Jason Furtado said. “We were in a lot of matches, but you have to give it to Manteca — they just have a great team.”
