It took a combination platter of the best tennis players at Sonora High to accomplish a feat no Valley Oak League doubles tandem was able to do, when Brianne McRee and Brielle Snyder teamed up for a 6-2, 6-0 win over No. 1 seeded Stephanie Vanni and Maryann Baker Thursday.
The Valley Oak League Doubles Tournament was clearly turned upside down by the improved Sonora duo, stopping what has been arguably the most dynamic 2-year tennis run in doubles play.
“They were really good individually, so together they really made a good doubles team,” Sierra head coach Marti Teunissen said of the two Wildcats. “I am not sure if my team got intimidated or what, but they did not play their game.
“They got down a set and it was obvious that they weren’t used to losing.”
The Sierra pair had won 28 consecutive matches during the VOL season, which was following a perfect run in doubles play a season ago for Vanni. Last season Vanni and partner Jena Anderson were able to handle Oakdale’s super-singles pair of Elise Derby and Tierney Siedel, this year the task was too tough.
“They didn’t play well and they got down and those girls were able to take full advantage,” Teunissen said. “But we still have playoffs to look forward to.
“It’s a good thing that we still have something to work towards, but getting the No. 1 seed would have been nice.”
Sierra’s singles standout Vannida Mimi Nguyen fell short in her bid for the league’s singles title, falling in straight sets to Kimball’s Pyper Brown 6-0, 6-1.
“I think Pyper moved here from Ohio, but she is really out of everybody’s league in the VOL,” Teunissen said. “She is such a good player. Vannida did an awesome job to make it to the championship.”
Vy and Ly Hoang teamed up for Weston Ranch and knocked off East Union’s top doubles tandem 6-3, 6-4 in their win over Shalane Jackson and Klasey Kachalkin. The Cougars pair beat their teammates Nicole Bowen and Cristina Poklay 8-6 before losing to the eventual champions.
The Sac-Joaquin Section Division II girls individual tournament will be held Nov. 4-5 at the Johnson Ranch Racquet Club in Roseville. The top two seeds in the VOL will make the trip. The SJS Girls Team Tennis Tournament will get under way Nov. 1 with the higher seed being the host. The top-three VOL seeds will be allowed to continue their season. Weston Ranch is the league’s No. 1 seed, and they’ve earned a first-round bye before hosting its second-round match.
