OAKDALE – Osayi Oswaro led  Sierra through a physical contest to help the Timberwolves down Oakdale 3-1 and remain atop the Valley Oak League.  

“It was a tough, physical game,” Sierra coach Joe Pires said. We had 12 fouls against us and there were eight against them.”

Osayi Oswaro got the Timberwolves (9-1-1 VOL, 13-5-2 overall) on the board with the game’s first goal in the 20th minute on a breakaway when he covered his own rebound and got the ball back in the net. After the Mustangs (5-4-2, 8-8-4) scored to tie the game in the 25th minute, Oswaro assisted Guilhermo Kelly for a 2-1 lead in the 39th minute. 

Oswaro wrapped up the 17-shot attack in the 63rd minute on an assist from Alex Mendez. 

Oakdale was held to just eight shots.

Central Catholic of Modesto 1, Weston Ranch 0

MODESTO – The Cougars (7-3-1, 7-10-3) gave up the only goal of the game on an own goal in the second half.  

“We didn’t generate too many chances,” Weston Ranch coach Francisco Cisneros said. “Central Catholic played really organized and they stayed back. It was tough to get through on them.”

Francisco Vega tallied six saves for the Cougars. 

Kimball 3, Manteca 2

The Buffaloes (0-10-1, 0-15-1) gave up a penalty kick late in the game which proved to be the difference. 

“It was a good game,” Manteca coach Daniel Guevara said. “Unfortunately a game like that is often decided by who makes the first crucial mistake.” 

The Jaguars (3-7-1, 4-11-1) scored first. Brian Sanchez tied the game for the Buffaloes in the 30th minute on an assist from Paulo Noriega and Andrew Michaelis gave Manteca a 2-1 lead early in the second half when he tapped in a deflection.

Girls

Hilmar 0, Ripon 0

HILMAR – The rivalry continues.

The Indians and the Yellowjackets have split the last 12 Trans-Valley League titles at 6-6 and with Monday’s TVL tie, in three meetings between the two rivals this season there has been one goal scored in regulation play, a 1-0 road win for Hilmar on Wednesday, Jan. 17. The other contest ended in a shootout win for the Yellowjackets in the Ripon Christian Tournament. 

Ripon (5-1-1 TVL, 10-4-2 overall) was held without a shot in the first half and finished with an 8-6 shot advantage, with five of the eight Indians shots being on goal. Conversely, Hilmar (7-0-1, 16-1-6) had just one shot on goal.

Aubree Pelon had three shots on goal for Ripon and teammate Ariana Scholten had a lofting shot in the 60th minute that skipped off the top of the crossbar.

Mikayla Schmidt tallied five goalie saves for the Yellowjackets.

East Union 3, Lathrop 0

Jonathan Diaz, Louis Ruvalcaba and Cristian Ramirez each scored a goal for the Lancers who are now 11-0 in VOL play. 

Jesus Montanez played outstanding on defense for East Union. 

Oakdale 2, Sierra 1 

Axel Rios scored the lone goal for the Timberwolves on an assist from Kevin Hernandez.
