East Union senior Sarah Phillips led a contingent of four Lady Lancers in the 2nd Annual Folsom High Girls Invitational on Saturday, successfully defending her crown in the 108-pound division.
Mariah Wheeler also placed, taking fourth.
Phillips is off to a hot start to the season after medaling in last year’s California Interscholastic Federation Girls State Invitational. She demolished her first three opponents, recording technical-fall victories in Rounds 1 and 2 before pinning Rosette Hing of Cesar Chavez High in just 17 seconds. Her dominant run ended with a 1:30 stoppage Lincoln’s Dominique Nunez.
Wheeler competed in the deeper 114-pound division and was done in by the match-limit rule in her final bout. She started off losing to Las Plumas’ Alicia Gee in 59 seconds. After two pinfall victories she had a chance to exact revenge against Gee in the consolation semifinals and ended up winning via injury default. Because Wheeler reached the five-match limit for the day, she ended up forfeiting the third-place match to Loren Oliver of Florin.
Hunter Higgins (132) and Tabitha Barrington (146) also competed but failed to place. Barrington’s lone win was a 3:26 pinning of Ponderosa’s Jaclyn Fields.
