The parity in the Valley Oak League has made for an exciting season for boys and girls basketball, but it also has several teams scrapping for postseason berths according to the first release of the Sac-Joaquin Section’s playoff power ratings.
Ripon Christian’s boys of the Division-IV Trans Valley League hold the highest seed among area teams, as they are ranked No. 1 in Division V.
The section will have updated ratings available on its website, www.cifsjs.org, on Feb. 8 and Feb. 16. The final playoff brackets will be released on Sunday, Feb. 21.
The top 16 rated teams in each division will make up the playoff brackets.
The ratings have been tweaked this season, and all semifinalists in every division will qualify for the California Interscholastic Federation Northern California Regional Championships. Only the Sac-Joaquin section champions and runners-up advanced to NorCals in years past.
League records will again weigh heavily against a team’s seeding rating, and predetermined ratings are set for each conference. Non-league record and non-league strength of schedule are also factored in, but this year quality of opponents, measured by overall opponents’ winning percentage, is taken into account.
The VOL’s defending boys and girls champions, Manteca and East Union, respectively, top their conference rivals in the first playoff power ratings.
On the boys side, Manteca (9-1, 16-5 overall) is ranked sixth with a 5.532 seeding rating. The Buffaloes trail established powerhouses, including top-seeded Sacramento (5-0, 13-4) of the Metropolitan Conference.
Weston Ranch (8-1, 12-8), responsible for Manteca’s only loss in league, is 11th and is followed by No. 16 Sierra (7-3, 14-7), No. 17 Sonora (7-4, 13-9) and No. 19 East Union (4-5, 9-10).
East Union’s girls team (9-1, 17-4) has built a nice lead ahead of the crowded pack in the VOL. The Lancers are No. 7, with Del Oro and nationally-recognized St. Mary’s of Stockton at 1 and 2, respectively.
Twelfth-rated Weston Ranch (6-3, 13-7), No. 13 Manteca (6-4, 13-8), No. 15 Sonora (7-4, 12-10), No. 16 Oakdale (5-4, 14-5) and No. 19 Sierra (5-5, 10-10) are all in the mix.
Both of Lathrop’s first-year varsity teams are 33rd in Division IV.
Ripon’s girls team is solidly entrenched at second place in the TVL behind Modesto Christian, the state’s second-ranked Division IV team according to CalHiSports.com. The Indians (3-1, 9-8) are No. 9 in the section’s Division IV ratings list with undefeated Argonaut and Modesto Christian leading the way.
The Ripon boys (2-2, 9-10) are on the outside looking in at No. 20 following back-to-back losses to TVL opponents Modesto Christian, the division’s fourth seed, and Ripon Christian last week. Ripon faces Escalon, 11th in Division IV, tonight to wrap up the first round of conference play.
