Ripon Christian rode the hot hand of Jordan Vander Veen to a 25-18, 25-17, 25-17 sweep of visiting crosstown rival Ripon in non-league girls volleyball action.

Vander Veen patrolled the front and back lines with a vengeance, hammering 10 kills and grinding out 11 digs.

“As an outside hitter you have a lot of jobs,” Vander Veen said. “You have to get your kills and get your digs to keep the team in the game.”

The first two sets were close for the most part but once the Knights (19-4) took the lead at 9-8 in the third set the Indians (15-9) never led again.

“They are a solid team,” Ripon Christian coach Kayla Kootstra said. “In general, we take a little bit of time to get settled and I think you saw that in the first two sets. We played with them in the first set and we were able to pull away from them at the end due to all-around team play.

“In the third set we got rid some of the jitters and we came out ready to go.”

Eva Benedict and Megan Weststeyn split the setting duties for the Knights with Benedict dishing out 17 assists and Weststeyn 14.

“It’s a lot of fun,” Benedict said. “A lot of those girls can smack the ball really hard so it’s a lot of fun to be the one that helps get those kills.”

Ripon Christian’s Ava Van Groningen and Avery McMurray tallied 11 digs apiece and Sydney Hoffman added nine kills.

Ripon coach Casey Kresge acknowledged that her team was just outplayed in the third set.

“In that third game Ripon Christian just outplayed us,” Kresge said. “Our energy just fell flat. When we made a mistake we were not able to bounce back like we did in the first two games.

“Ripon Christian did a good job when they found our weaknesses and they just kept pushing.”

Kailee Inderbitzin led the Indians with eight kills. Kaya Whittaker and Adriana Dorn (four kills, two blocks) each put up 10 assists, Reagan Wilkerson had 10 kills with two blocks apiece for Makenzie Loechler, Avery McKiernan and Katherine Eskes.
