RC soccer falls to Le Grand in opener

Ripon Christian opened Southern League play with a 2-0 loss to host Le Grand on Tuesday.

 The Bulldogs (1-0 SL, 1-1 overall) caught the Knights (2-6, 2-1) off guard with a goal off of a through ball in the game’s first minute.

 “The guys picked their heads up quickly and weathered the attack,” Ripon Christian coach Keith Terpsma said.

 Lukas Vermeulen (15 saves) made multiple saves early in the game to keep Le Grand from pulling away. The Bulldogs got their second goal in the 33rd minute on a penalty kick following a trip in the box.

 The Knights held Le Grand scoreless in the second half.”

“Our second half proved that we could hang with LeGrand,” Terpsma said. “We’ll be looking to improve quickly to look for a win next time.”

The Cougars scored three second-half goals to pull away in their Valley Oak League opener Monday on the road at Don Nicholson Stadium

 Joseph Mayorca was in on the first and last goals for Weston Ranch (1-0 VOL, 10-1 overall), scoring the first late in the first half off of an assist by Cristian Parades and he assisted Kevin Medina on the game’s last goal.

 Medina assisted Bryant Ortiz to make the score 2-0 and Deon Coffey took an assist from Medina for a 3-0 lead.

 “Kimball played well in the first half and made it tough on us,” Cougars coach Francisco Cisneros said. “In the second half we played much better and at a quicker pace.

 “We’ve been off to really slow starts lately. Hopefully we can get off to better start against a tough EU team coming up on Wednesday.”
