RHS hurlers throw gems

One pitching gem followed another for Ripon on Thursday.

Danielle Sperry exacted some revenge in her four-hit masterpiece in a 5-1 victory over Escalon just one day after Mackenzie Gauden tossed a no-hitter.

“We had a nine-run second inning and Mackenzie pretty much dominated the game from start to finish,” Ripon coach Robert Vernon said of Wednesday’s effort. “As far as Sperry, she gave up two home runs early in our first game with Escalon and we had to come from behind to win it with Mackenzie pitching in relief. She just stepped it up a notch and was throwing a lot harder today.”

Gauden struck out seven in Ripon’s 11-0 win over Orestimba and faced one batter over the minimum. A first-inning error thwarted her bid for a perfect game, but outfielder Tiara Chacon later made a diving grab to keep the no-no intact.

In the Escalon game, Sperry gave up three hits and no earned runs while fanning eight.

Cara Brown clubbed a solo home run in the fourth inning to highlight the offense. Karla Calderon sparked a three-run second inning rally with an RBI double. Darian Vander Maaten went 2 for 4 with an RBI and a double.
