Kole Gonzales racked up six goals, as the Ripon boys water polo team routed Ceres 22-3 Thursday in the first round of the Sac-Joaquin Section Division II playoffs held at Woodcreek High of Roseville.
The Valley Oak League champion Indians (25-3) face Capital Athletic League runner-up Christian Brothers at 8 a.m. next Tuesday in the quarterfinals, which takes place at Rocklin’s Whitney High. Christian Brothers edged Bella Vista 6-5 in its opener.
“We did what we came to do,” Ripon coach Erik Zador said. “We worked on things while gearing up for our next game. Looking good, so far.”
Ripon led 6-1 after the first quarter and scored seven goals in the quarter to take an 18-3 advantage into the final period.
Zach Scudder added five goals, and freshman Ty Wells had four goals to go with five steals and an assist. Nathaniel Gagnon and Carson Morrow each chipped in three goals. Nick Gagnon had one. Goalie Jacob Thompson collected six saves.
Top-seeded Ripon is a favorite to reach the final along with 10-time section Rio Americano, which drubbed McClatchy 20-5 on Thursday. The Indians edged Rio Americano 12-11 in the fifth-place game of the DeLong Tournament two weeks ago.
