The Ripon Christian soccer program opened up its 2012 Sac-Joaquin Section Division-VII Championship run with a one-sided 3-0 victory over host a Global Youth Charter Thursday.

Ripon Christian upset the tournament’s No. 4 seed, setting up a matchup with tournament top-seed Sacramento Country Day.

Ripon Christian got on the scoreboard in the 25th minute, getting a score from Jeremy Sonke. Five minutes later the Knights were back on the board when Danny Vander Molen made a run on a perfect pass from Kyle Van Vuren.

“Global Youth put on the pressure in the second half,” Ripon Christian head coach Keith Terpsma said. “But our defense held solid and didn’t allow anybody to sneak into their penalty box.”

The Knights got a solid effort from keeper Lucas Vermeulen, who posted five saves.

Vander Molen would add the Knights’ final goal, connecting in the 68th minute on a cross from Paul Cho.

The Knights will travel to meet Sacramento Country Day Thursday in the semifinal.

A victory for the Knights will assure the squad a berth into the section final for the first time since the Knights loss the section title to Escalon 3-0 in 1996.
