The Ripon Christian boys soccer team posted a much-needed Southern League win over Turlock Christian on Tuesday.

The Knights needed two second-half goals in their 2-1 victory.

“It wasn’t the prettiest game of soccer I’ve seen, but the guys were able to pull it off,” said RC coach Keith Terpstra.

The Knights (1-4) trailed 1-0 before Christian Manes, thanks to an assist from Max Koetsier, tied the game in 62nd minute.

RC kept on attacking in the second half – the Knights got three times more shots at goals than Turlock Christian – and finally surged ahead.

Kyle Mailhot was able to put the winning goal in from the back of the Eagles’ net with three minutes to go after a mad scramble.

“Mailhot walked the ball in after a quick header from Jeremy Sonke,” he added.

Terpsma, in the end, was proud of his players.

“They never gave up on that game,” he said. “And it just goes to show that sometimes the team with the most heart can win.”

In addition, RC goal keeper Jon Vander Molen had six saves.

The Knights will host Delhi on Thursday.

Trans-Valley League

Ripon 5, Modesto Christian 2

Freshman Emanuel Sanchez scored two goals to help lead the Indians past the visiting Crusaders.

Ripon (2-2 in the Trans Valley League) also got scores from Cesar Nuno, Jackson Bair, and Jack Brierly, who also had an assist.

In addition, Felix Garcia had two assists while Henk Gaalswyk came up with three saves.

“We came out strong, scoring three goals in the first 20 minutes of the game,” said Ripon coach Jamie DeBruyn. “In the second half, we added another goal but we also kept the pressure on (Modesto Christian).”

The Indians will travel to Riverbank on Thursday.
