MARIPOSA — Nearly unstoppable in the opening quarter, the Ripon Christian boys basketball team struggled to make shots down the stretch in its 81-68 nonleague loss to Mariposa on Saturday.

The Knights raced out to a 29-21 first-quarter lead in this annual showdown of former Southern League adversaries. Ripon Christian ran the table for three straight SL championships before losing twice to Mariposa in 2014 and returning to the Trans-Valley League.

The rivalry picked up where it left off, but it was Mariposa (13-4) that finished strong with a late flurry. The Bears outpointed Ripon Christian (12-6) 24-8 in the fourth quarters, overcoming a size disadvantage and 13 made 3s from the Knights. Mariposa’s Dalton Rockwood topped all scorers with 24 points and was one of four Bears in double figures.

Ripon Christian also had four players hit double digits, as Zach Cortright and Daniel Hannink each drained five 3s and finished with 17 points. Andrew Vander Weide added 11 points, and Ty Beidleman had 10.
