RIPON — Manteca was court savvy Thursday and used its experience to sweep Ripon in its first-ever boys volleyball game 25-15, 25-17, 25-11 in non-league volleyball action.

“We’re starting out just trying to stay in rotation and get some basics in,” Buffaloes coach Kevin Bolding said. “We have some returners but we also have some new people so it is time to get that mix going.

“Overall, we did a good job. Obviously, we have a few things to work on and hopefully we can continue to build off of this. But they were a good team, especially for a first-year team.”

Kylan Chandler was in mid-season form for Manteca (2-0) with 11 kills and six digs. 

“We came out and had a good game,” Chandler said. “My setter Johnny (Borres), Cam (Reis) our middle and all of our players were really clicking.

“We have been working on it in practice and we came out here and executed.”

Borres dished out 21 assists and two digs.

“We got some good passing especially from our sophomore libero, Gabriel Ramirez,” Borres said. “Passing is something we all need to work on and I need to work on my sets as well.”

Ramirez had 15 digs, Noah Gonzales six kills, two digs and Reis rounded out the Buffaloes attack with seven kills.

“We came out excited to play,” Reis said. “We know that they are a young team so we didn’t want to get too far ahead of ourselves.

“We just played our game and it ended up going our way.”

Michael Winters did well outside hitting for the Indians (0-1) and Dylan Sexton was the setter and moved the ball around to open up the offense. 

“We are learning how to communicate on the floor and play positions,” Ripon coach Rod Wright said. “Everything is overwhelming but the whole goal for the season is to build a program and have fun from the very beginning.

“As they get more used to this, they will get better. Everybody’s learning.”
