Ripon drops PK heartbreaker at 2nd-seeded West Park

Ripon’s girls soccer team was moments away from avenging a bitter defeat, only to have its heart broken in even more brutal fashion in a Sac-Joaquin Section Division IV semifinal Friday in Roseville.

The third-seeded Indians lost to West Park 4-3 on penalty kicks after they played to a 3-3 draw in regulation. The No. 2 Panthers (10-4-4) twice trailed by two goals and knotted it with a stoppage time corner kick to send it into extra time.

Sophomore Olivia Maragos scored another brace for Ripon (20-5-2) after accounting for both of her team’s goals in a 2-0 quarterfinal win over Twelve Bridges on Wednesday. Katie Martin had a goal and an assist. Seniors Ariana Daniels and Jaydin Kroutil each contributed with an assist.

Ripon led 2-0 by the 21st minute and 3-1 when Maragos scored her second goal in the 47th minute.

The Indians looked forward to the matchup. Last season, they were the No. 1 seed when West Park — then a first-year varsity team without seniors — visited and came away with a commanding 4-2 win, but Ripon had injuries to key players leading up to and during the game.

Injuries played a role again in the rematch, as goalkeeper Ellena Parenti-Gomez, senior center back Makenna Pokorny and Martin picked up knocks, but that was not the reason for Ripon’s dismay.

“Real emotional, tough game,” Ripon coach Bryce Perkins said. “This is not a game we lost, in my opinion.”

West Park pressed to get the equalizer in the waning moments of regulation and was awarded one last corner kick — the Panthers had seven in the final eight minutes, on Perkins’ tally — in stoppage time, though it did not appear to come off a Ripon player in a duel for the bouncing 50-50 ball in front of the goal.

West Park capitalized on the opportunity with a cleanly-headed ball that was crossed to the opposite post.

The controversy did not end there.

With 2 minutes left in the second overtime, Maragos fired a shot from the top of the box that deflected off a defender. After regaining possession, Maragos had her legs swept from under her a late challenge in the penalty box, but no foul was called.

Parenti-Gomez, who finished with 11 saves, played through a knee injury sustained in a collision with an attacking player. She was able to block one of the Panthers’ attempts in PK shootout. The game ended on a miss from Ripon.

“The girls did really well,” Perkins said. “We had a lot of injuries and it was a hard-fought game. (West Park is) a powerful team, but we managed to find ways to get through (for goals). They’re bigger and taller, just a really good squad we went up against.”

“We lose nine seniors, but we have a great, young team coming up.”

West Park will face No. 1 Placer (10-4-5) in the championship game Monday at Cosumnes River College.
