With two of its top three players still competing for the school’s playoff basketball team, Ripon High’s golf squad managed to escape Manteca Park Golf Course with a 231-235 nonleague victory over host Manteca Monday.
The difference in this season-opening match was freshman Nick Sharp, whose six-over-par 43 led the Indians. Manteca’s Tim Baker was the medalist with a 42.
“I knew it would be tough going into today not having two of our top three guys, but I thought we’d do better,” Ripon coach Chris Musseman said. “If it was not for our freshman, we would have lost this match.”
Also scoring for Ripon was Jason Williamson with a 44, Bobby Fiegeriod and Nick Mendonca each with a 47 and Cole Bagdasarian with a 50.
For Manteca, Justin Morrish turned in a 44, Brandon Ramirez a 48, Kyle Howard a 50 and Dakota Morris and Davey Tolbert each with a 51.
Ripon returns to Manteca Park Golf Course this Wednesday to square off with East Union, while Matneca hosts West of Tracy next Monday, March 5.
