Ripon girls capture Sub -Section title

ANGELS CAMP - The Ripon High varsity girls’ cross-country team closed out the Sac-Joaquin Sub-Section race at Frogtown with the Division IV sub-section title, finishing as the No. 1 girls team in the competition 12 points ahead of Amador High, 112-124.

Ripon was led by freshman Ellie Waters who closed the meet with a 17th overall finish. Teammate Jessica Carmona was right behind her with a 19th overall finish, followed by Alexis Keylon (23rd), Ana Hermosillo (24th) and Analisa Rangel (29th).

The top-10 programs advanced to sections, extending the Indians season at least another week. The boys’ squad also earned a berth into sections with their 6th place finish on the boys Division-IV side.

Ripon’s boys came in behind No. 1 Dixon High, with Alec Steinberg leading the way with a 24th overall finish. Lathrop High (14th) just missed out on advancing to the next round.

The girls Division-III race saw both Manteca (6th) and Sierra high schools (9th) advance to the section race. The Buffaloes were led by junior Harleen Pabla who had the area’s best overall girls finish with a sixth place run. Esmeralda Cuenca (20th) was the lone other Buffalo to earn a top-20 finish.

Sierra’s top runner, sophomore Haley Silva, was the 23rd finisher and leader of her teams’ top-10 finish.

Manteca’s boys squad put together 5th place overall finish in the Division-III standings. Senior Phillip Herrera led the way with 13th overall finish for the Buffs.

Sierra High’s John Spooner was the first finisher for the 7th place Timberwolves, posting an area best boys time of 16:25, good for 6th place overall in the race.

The advancing teams will continue their season at Willow Hill Cross Country Course in Folsom adjacent to the Folsom High campus. Races will have staggered start times throughout the competition Saturday.
