Ripon knocks off defending champ

Ripon High’s boys golf team isn’t celebrating yet after its 213-228 win over defending Trans Valley League champion Escalon at Oakdale Golf and Country Club Thursday.

That’s just the Indians second of 12 dual matches, and Escalon has the two conference tournaments to catch up.

And while the Cougars didn’t play up to their potential on their home course, it’s still a much-needed win for Ripon (2-0, 4-0 overall).

“I was expecting them to score a little lower, but our kids were just a little more focused,” Ripon coach Chris Musseman said. “This was a big one for us, hopefully we don’t let up. We know Escalon is capable of playing better the next time we face them.”

Ripon standout Andrew Bonner was the medalist with a 4-over-par 40. Teammate Jordan Williamson placed second, and Jake Carroll carded Escalon’s top score of 42 for third.

Also contributing for the Indians were Josh Richter (43), Zach Capel (43) and Jack Brierly (46).

“What I liked best is that Andrew Bonner didn’t carry us today,” Musseman said. “We proved that we can do it as a team. The kids rely on him because they know he’s good, but it’s nice to see guys like Jordan and Zach step up.

“Jack Brierly has been a big surprise for us this year. He started off shooting in the low 50s, and he’s just been shaving a couple strokes every week.”

The Indians will take the chance to sharpen their skills Monday in the Hilmar Tournament, which is hosted at the always-tough Stevinson Ranch Golf Course. They return to TVL play Tuesday when Orestimba visits.

Manteca 231, Kimball 253

Three players tied for medalist honors at Manteca Park Golf Course’s par-37 front nine.

Manteca’s Nick Gonzales and Casey Benson shared the low score of 42, as did Phil Simpson of Kimball (1-1, 3-3).

Tim Baker (47), Kody Morris (48) and Davey Tolbert (52) made up the rest of the team score for the Buffaloes (1-1, 2-2), who take on reigning VOL champ East Union on March 17.
