Ripon High’s boys golf team made a statement in its Trans-Valley League opener against visiting Hilmar Thursday at Jack Tone Golf Course’s par-31 front nine.

Led by Josh Richter’s impressive 1-under round of 30, the Indians posted their best score under fifth-year coach Chris Musseman in a 169-190 win.

Sophomore standout Andrew Bonner, fresh off the basketball season, shot an even 31 but was two under going into the eighth hole.

Jordan Williamson carded an impressive 32 and was followed by Zach Capel’s 35 and Jason Williamson’s 40.

“For Bonner to come out on his second day of hitting golf balls and par the round is pretty good,” Musseman said. “Josh put in some work in the offseason and it’s showing, and I think the Williamson brothers are doing a great job.

“I wasn’t sure at the beginning of season what our No. 4 and 5 would look like, but if they stay consistent we’re going to be pretty decent.”

Ripon (1-0, 2-0 overall) will be well tested next week, first with the Lincoln Tournament Monday at Brookside Country Club in Stockton. The Indians will then return to league play against defending champ Escalon at Oakdale Country Club.

“We’re going to find out real quick where we stand,” Musseman said.
